My Patents:

What are Patents?

A patent is a legal document that grants the person who invents something the exclusive right to make, use, and sell their invention for a certain period of time, usually 20 years. This means that during that time, no one else can make, use, or sell the same invention without the patent holder's permission.

Patents are granted by government agencies, and they are intended to encourage innovation and creativity by providing inventors with a way to protect their ideas and inventions from being copied by others. In order to be granted a patent, an invention must meet certain criteria, including being novel (i.e., not previously invented or publicly disclosed), non-obvious (i.e., not something that an expert in the field would have thought of easily), and useful (i.e., serving some practical purpose).
